If you follow hockey even casually, you are probably aware of the fact that Sidney Crosbitch, oops Crosby is out indefinitely again with more concussion like symptoms from a hit he took from David Krejci (Not an elbow, like the crybaby has suggested). The thing that surprises me most about this, after seeing the hit several times on the morning Sportscentre loop is that, there should have been nothing that would cause any type of head trauma. The other thing that I am really seeing from this, is that if Crosby is going to sit out after every hard hit that rattles his cage a little bit, if I am a head coach, I am telling my guys, you get #87 in your cross hairs for a good hard clean hit, take it, because you will be able to keep him off the ice.
The other thing that annoys me about this, is the massive fail by the NHL to promote other talented players in the NHL. Sure Tyler Seguin and Claude Giroux (ironically enough, Giroux is out with a concussion after taking a knee to the head from teammate Wayne Simmonds) are getting some recognition due to the fact that they are in what some call the "sexy" markets and I call the NBC 7. They put all there eggs into one basket not realizing it was humpty dumpty, and well, we all know how that one ended.
The other thing bothering me is a bunch of new fans and idiots who wish to make their opinions known who don't really know anything about hockey that are saying concussions are up, they are wrong. Concussions are not up, they are near the same level, just that right now, the concussions are being suffered by some of the bigger names in the NHL.
I would also like to say this on the concussion issue and hopefully that will be the last of it unless somebody makes a real stupid comment in the media. I have played all types of hockey. I have been a target of other teams, but I have never taken one of these hits that causes a concussion. It wasn't because I didn't go into dangerous areas, I just kept my head up and kept my game simple, if someone was trying to get me into a spot like that, I would adjust and do something different that wasn't going to keep in the trolley tracks and if the guy did follow through with a hit it was usually a real late hit which resulted in a penalty or they would fall back and go for defensive positioning. I played smart and always was aware of my surroundings, especially with some of the people I played with because some of them were just guys that had absolutely no reason to be playing and were just out there to try and hurt people. I honestly think that when it comes to the concussion issue, there has to be more onus put on the guy receiving the hit. If you get caught with your head down, you aren't aware of your surroundings and if you get caught with a hard hit that you weren't expecting, that should be on the guy getting hit, not the guy delivering the hit because he is just finishing his man.
I am really surprised that the Minnesota Wild are still sitting #1 in the entire NHL right now, they have yet to falter but the Canucks are starting to close the gap. I am not sure if the Wild can keep it up, they have stayed healthy, but I want to see how they play later in the season if I give them legit contender status or if they are still a pretender.
Onto the douche bag Hawks now, or should I say a certain douche bag in the form of Dave Bolland. On an interview yesterday on WGN went on a rant calling the Sedin's, sisters and saying that they would never become Hawks and he wouldn't want them on his team. This coming from a guy who is a dirty player and gets away with the stuff he does because he plays for one of the NBC 7. Let's see if he would get away with this crap if he was on a team based out of Western Canada, and the fact that he wouldn't want them on is team is simple, it would mean he is out of a job. He would later retract these words but seriously, why say them if you don't mean them. He is just lucky there is the instigator rule because if there wasn't he would be eating some Canuck fists in a hurry next time they play.
The last thing I want to comment on this blog is All-Star game voting. If you have looked at them, it is quite obvious that the only people that are voting live East of Chicago. The voting right now features mainly the NBC 7 and the local Ontario teams (the ASG is being hosted by Ottawa) and you have to look far down the lists to find guys East of Chicago. The first forward West of Chicago is Daniel Sedin in 17th. Outside of Nikolai Khabibulin in goal, the top player West of Chicago reside in Vancouver as Alex Edler is the top vote getting defenceman west of Chicago. So basically, if you think there is a problem with the voting, you are right, because people don't vote based on skill or achievements or playing well during the season, it is a popularity contest, nothing more.
That is all I have for now, until next time, keep your stick on the ice.
