Well, it has been a couple months into Brendan Shanahan run as chief disciplinarian and my grade for him has come out. And it is an F.
When Shanahan came in, I was hoping for a change from the inconsistency that was plaguing the Colin Campbell era, however, Shanahan has failed.
It still appears that if you are part of the NBC 7, (Pittsburgh, Washington, Boston, Detroit, Chicago, New York Rangers, and Philadelphia) you can still get away with stuff, and if people do stuff to you, they can expect heavier punishments.
If you don't believe me take a look at these and I will give my take.
Here is Lucic on Miller
Miller comes out to play the puck away from Lucic who then drives straight through Miller. Not to mention getting his arms up and running through him, this is definitely a suspension in my opinion.
Now we have Pacioretty on Letang
While Pacioretty does get the head on the play, I do not believe that was the way he intended as Letang even saw him coming and decided to turn a little and take the shot and Pacioretty caught the head before he got the body. Pacioretty got three games for this and says that part of the reference that Shanahan brought up for this was the Matt Cooke hit on Savard. There are a few similarities but not many, as in both guys were shooting, and that is about it. This shouldn't have been a suspension as Pacioretty wasn't trying to target the head and basically got penalized for hitting a member of the NBC 7.
Now here is Jordin Tootoo plowing through Ryan Miller
Here is another running at Ryan Miller who should have taken his blocker and made Tootoo eat it. Tootoo should easily get a few games for this, anything under 5 is a disgrace as the ruling has yet to come down on this as per every reputable hockey website I can find.
Now onto one of my favorite Gm's in Brian Burke and his battle with certain members of the Toronto based media.
The Toronto media or perhaps certain members of it feel they were lied to when they were told Jonas Gustavsson would start against Boston and it turned out to be James Reimer who got the nod.
This was said by one of the worst in the Toronto media Steve Simmons, "It's time for Burke to calm down and take a leadership role in the ongoing spat between local media and the Maple Leafs. His adding to the poisonous atmosphere benefits no one."
First off Steve Simmons, the Toronto Maple Leafs don't have to tell you jack shit. It is up for them to decide which goalie they will play and who they think will give them the best chance to win. If there decision changes from a couple day ahead to the night of the game, that is completely up to the coaches of the team, not up to you or any other member of the media that follows the Maple Leafs to decide.
Next, if the Toronto media had even a brain cell of intelligence, they would learn that they are not entitled to know as much as they think they are. Seriously, they go out of their way to find James Reimer's parents number to find out the injury status on him, seriously are you that fucking desperate for a scoop, respect what the team gives you for an answer and leave it at that, true, it may be a little vague, but that is all they have to tell you, respect the amount of info they give and don't go around trying to leech out info from other family members.
The only thing that I can say about this has already been said by Cam Cole this is paraphrased from his National Post article "Anyone who works as a reporter and has not been lied to, routinely — or simply misled, or misinformed, or had half the story given to him/her and the important part left out — is clearly covering something other than professional sports."
Bottom line I can give from you is this, since it was said by Steve Simmons the piece should be burned, whited out, ignored and just plain old not read, unless you were wanting to lose more than one hundred IQ points.
That is all I have for right now, until next time, keep your stick on the ice.
