*This took me a couple days to complete due to being sick, so some of this stuff may seem weird for dates on here*
Well, we are into a new calendar year and the NHL Winter Classic was yesterday and all I can say is, they really need to expand the teams in it. Even though I did enjoy the alumni game which featured many big names including Eric Lindros and John LeClair, this has got to be taken to more markets than the NBC 7 and Buffalo, who probably only got the game because they were hosting Gary Bettman ball sucker Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Even though there was some drama and a good story in the game, especially with the penalty shot late, I really couldn't care what happened in the game due to the fact that I really don't cheer for either of these teams (Although I have become a fan of Ilya Bryzgalov through his comments and open demeanour).
The way it is sounding right now is that another NBC 7 team will be hosting it next year in the Detroit Red Wings, the one thing that is interesting about this one, is that if the fans had their choice and it makes very good sense from a money standpoint is against the Toronto Maple Leafs. I honestly think that this would be the best one as they are close geographically, and if they get it into the football stadium in Detroit which seats about 100,000 and if the average ticket is $100, that is a $10M gate for one game and if the NHL isn't actually trying to make more money for all the teams, then I don't know what the hell they are doing.
The next piece I would like to speak on is a slimy piece of shit, as he will now be known to me in Pierre Gauthier. For those of you who are not aware, Gauthier on Saturday apologized to the media on Saturday for not hiring a french speaking coach. First off, way to throw the coach under the bus, second of all, I thought that the hiring of Randy Cunneyworth was because you thought he was going to give you the best chance to win. This is probably the most classless move I have ever seen when it comes to professional sports management throwing a guy under the bus because a guy is not bilingual. Personally, if I were Randy Cunneyworth I would asked to be bought out of my contract because this was absolutely tasteless and showed no respect for Cunneyworth.
If you are unaware, the sheriff of the NHL, Brendan Shanahan has been dispatching justice again and the punishments have been severe this time. Rene Bourque has been suspended 5 games for an elbow on Nicklas Backstrom of the Washington Capitals. Also, Dan Carcillo of the Chicago Blackhawks has been suspended indefinitely for a nasty hit on Tom Gilbert, and since they still suspend heavier for repeat offenders, I see Carcillo, with the NHL looking to make a severe statement trying to get back into the good graces of fans that actually know hockey, I see around 15 games coming, and the ironic thing is Carcillo may be out even longer as when he delivered the hit Gibert then fell down on Carcillo's leg.
There also is the matter for the NHL to deal with about an apparent racial slur by Krys Barch of the Florida Panthers towards PK Subban of the Montreal Canadiens. Unlike other times where there it has been a player accusing another player, this time a linesman heard it and it is probably the reason why this is taking place. I know a lot of stuff gets said but players should know better than to use racial slurs, no matter how heated it gets.
That is all for right now, until next time, keep your stick on the ice.
